"Here are some basic art terms and their definitions"

Art Terms:

Artist's proof - The most valued of any artist's editions, these are very limited in the number available and in some cases are the actual proofs that the artist got from the printer before printing the edition so the artist could approve which proof met his standards. These days with printing being so advanced, Artist's proof can mean different things as far as what makes them special. Some artist's highlight their APs, others add something to the print or in the border..But always, they are the most limited and most valued.

Edition - A term for a particular print and number of prints of the same title by an artist. For Example Pomm's painting Rue De Bois has 250 prints that will be made so one could say "in the edition of Rue de Bois there are only 250 prints total".

Giclee ( gee-clay) - French word meaning basically a "spray of water" . It is a special printing process where Archival inks are sprayed on to paper or canvas and create a print as close to the original painting as can be done. (Pomm's Exclusive Collection reproductions uses this process)

Limited Edition - Means that there are only so many of each print made..making them more valuable as no more prints are reproduced after they are sold out. Any kind of print can be a Limited Edition..giclees, lithographs, photos etc. It's determined by the Artist or the Artist's publisher of the work. Limited Editions always have a number somewhere on the print..for example, if the edition has 350 prints available..they would be numbered 1/350, 2/350 etc... If the Lithograph process was used to reproduce the art, then in a Limited Edition, the printing plate would have been destroyed after the entire edition was printed. (look for a number on most of the prints and you will see one at the bottom)

Lithograph - A printing process that has been used for ages. A plate is made at the printers and this is used to recreate the image onto paper. Also called Lithos. (Pomm's Famous Collection are all reproduced as Lithographs)

Open Edition - No limit on the amount of prints that will be reproduced. Examples of Open Editions are posters which are often mass produced.

Original - The Original artwork that the artist created. This is not a print or reproduction but the actual piece the artist originally did. (Pomm's Unspoken Courage and Romeo's Love are examples of Originals)

Serigraphs - A process of print making in which a stencil is made(generally on a silk surface) and ink in forced through a screen in order to produce the desired image. (Pomm's Fresh Air, Homecoming and Corridor prints are all Serigraphs)
